Unpleasant Surprises
Planet Tarsus, Dr. David Hawkin's Underground Medicial Complex:
"Dr. Hawkins was poisoned?" Lance asked Pidge.
"Well, from the way the scanner reads, there's a toxin - or at least it's toxic to humans. Remember when we got a couple of Zarkon's men that surrendered to us?" Pidge asked them.
"Yeah,so? They wanted out of Zarkon's army, so we gave 'em asylum." Hunk gave Pidge a look.
"They were injured if I recall,Hunk. I think I know what Pidge is leading to. Keith replied.
"Exactly." Pidge said. "I was there when Dr. Gorma was treating those guys. One of them was pretty badly hurt and Dr. Gorma used a patch on him to help him with the pain, but it was different than the stuff used on humans."
"So you're saying Hawkins bought it from a drug used on Drules, right?" Lance raised a brow.
"Yep. Dr. Gorma can probably do a more thorough exam when we take him back to Arus. After all he is a relative to Commander Hawkins." Pidge pushed up his glasses a little.
"So Zarkon offed the doctor, attacked the princess and Lotor whacked him one." Hunk scratched his head. "For once I"m glad."
"The problem is.." Keith mused. "Is bringing this evidence to light without Zarkon finding out and covering it up."
"Uh, ahem.." Lance brought a hand to his mouth and coughed.
"Yeah Lance?" Pidge asked.
"This isn't helping us find Allura." Lance said quite calmly - too calmly really. "And all we have is physical evidence. Without the princess to tell them what really happened, we'll be hard put to hang Zarkon by his scaly neck - so I SUGGEST we find Allura!"
"And what are you going to do, Lance? Run off on a wild goose chase?" Keith gave him a dark look.
"Better than playing detective here. Besides since they're obviously not here, then, we follow the Princesses' ships' trail." Lance scowled.
"Did and done." Pidge said proudly.
"See, this is why he's part o' the team!" Lance quipped.
"Shut yer trap,Lance." Hunk replied. "Ya tracked it, little buddy? But hey, the Princess took off ina Slade class ship - has the latest in GG technology."
"Yeah, in other words, a piece of junk." Lance made a face.
"Some is, some ain't." Hunk replied. "Nothin' tho, can beat our Lion's - not even that fifteen car pile up they call 'Vehicle Voltron' back home."
Suddenly a signal came through on all their com badges.
"Voltron Force! Remember me?"
"It's Sven!" Pidge yelled.
"Hey, Sven, ya Swedehund!" Hunk grinned.
"I'm in Blue Lion. Coran sent me. Said ya might need Voltron."
"Hot damn." Lance suddenly grinned. "The old gang back together at last."
"I think we're about finished here." Keith said. "I've taken pictures and we've gathered the evidence. Pidge, will you be able to transport Dr. Hawkins body back without contamination?"
"Blue Lion might be better for that." Pidge said. "But I'm sure we can. This pod is sealed tightly. Only way I was able to do a scan was hook the controls up to this machine. "Okay. We'll get him in Blue Lion. Pidge, go ahead and imput Allura's trail into all the Lions' tracking systems." Keith said. "Sven, come on down. You have our signals. We have a 'passenger' for you."
"Roger that, Keith."
"Y'know, we've got peace and yet - " He sighed again. "Zarkon is still a menace. Why don't they SEE it?"
"They will, Lance. They will.."before it's too late, I hope... Keith happened to look up and his eyes widened.
"Everyone to the Lions - NOW!" Keith started to run to Black Lion, and the others looked up in alarm. Evidently the complex' warning devices were dead.
"Holy Shit!" Lance cursed. "A robeast!"
The five men ran to the Lions and immediately they were airborne, facing the creature.
"Where in the HELL did that come from?" Sven asked.
"From someone who still has a supply of lazon and materials to build one." Pidge said.
"If we're lucky, it's not Hagar-powered." Lance said grimly. "Let's form Voltron already."
"Yeah!" Hunk's hands gripped the controls of his lion.
The robeast blinked it's eyes and took in it's new threats. It was commanded to destroy the planet but these puny things stood in it's way. A brief second and it's ancient mind recognized the five small threats. Lions. And what was important about these lions?
Never let those lions come together, my pets!~ The witch intoned. "For if you do, you'll be forever shamed and you will be destroyed!
Yes. It remembered and it would do well. The five small lions zoomed in for an attack and that was exactly what the roebeast was waiting for. Far from lashing out as the pilots expected, it instead drew out it's arms and the lions incredibly went crashing into them, stuck like flies in it's sticky web.
"Can't break loose!" Sven gritted his teeth as he tried to pull Blue Lion away.
"Reverse polarity!" Keith yelled into the com.
"Dammit, nothing!" Lance banged his fist on the console. "Well, if he wants us to be so close, then I'm going to fire off a missile where the sun don't shine.."
Before Keith said anything, they were suddenly repelled off the robeast and flung hard into the planet's surface.
"Ugh. Somebody get the license plate?" Hunk groaned as he struggled to get the Yellow Lion up.
"Whoooooooaaaaaaahhhh!" Lance yelled as Red Lion was jerked up and flung into the robeast's hand.
"Now I know how a refrigerator magnet feels.." Lance shook his head to clear it. "Well, buddy, you might find me too hot to handle.."
"Lance, we're coming!" Keith yelled as the other four lions.
"Nah. Kitty Kat's gonna give 'im a hot time!" Lance grinned as he powered up his weapon's systems. The lion was building up tremendous heat in the robeast's hand, and just as Lance figured, the robeast threw him towards the planet's surface. Red Lion was able to right itself and Lance was ready for a good fight now. It'd been a long time since they had even fought a robeast.
Unseen by the lions, a ship in the shape of a ghastly skull waited and watched.
"Damn.." The Druule, Captain Veru - a hired renagade and a supporter of Zarkon's old Empire - cursed. He should have known one of Zarkon's moth eaten robeasts couldn't even thrash those lions properly. They had been the last thing that he had expected when King Zarkon had ordered him to have the robeast destroy the small planetoid.
"Hm.." Captain Veru stroked his chin thoughtfully and then smiled thinly. The robeast was obviously acting upon ancient instinct, but why not let this thing end with a bang? He did have control over the beast, after all. This way he could destroy the planet, the robeast and the Voltron Force in one fell swoop. Ah, the reward he would recieve! And when Zarkon resurrected his Empire again, he'd be very close to the seat of power.
Adjusting his headset which was tuned to the robeast, Veru said softly, "Arm planet killer missiles..do not engage the enemy."
The robeast paused in it's fight as the lions fired upon it.
"I'm reading a high level of energy from the robeast, Keith!" Pidge said.
"We're hitting it with everything we got." Keith said. "Time to form Voltron!"
"Bout damn time!" Lance's grin was feral.
"Sir! They're forming Voltron!" An ensign at the helm nervously reported.
"Fool!" Veru grinned. "I know that! Don't worry. I know what I'm doing!" He watched as the five lions formed the giant defender Voltron.
"All right, team. Let's rumble!" Keith yelled into his com. "We've been here long enough. Form - blazing - sword!"
Varu, clutched the sides of his chair eagerly. "Yes, that's right, friends, form the sword that will spell your doom!"
He spoke into his headset. "Turn about and fly INTO the planet,Beast! Launch missiles at my command!"
Varu's men looked at him as if he were crazy. Such an explosion would not only take the robeast, Voltron and the planet out, but themselves as well!
"Helm!" Varu barked. "When I give the command, you will take the Revenge into warp!"
"Yes sir!"
"Wouldn't try to hit the center at this close range." Pidge warned. "The explosion could take us both out!" "Tell us something we DON'T know.." Lance said.
"One, two, three!" Sven kicked at the robeast and amazingly enough, the robeast flipped over them. Voltron turned and the five pilots within saw the robeast face them.
"Let's get this over with!" Lance said.
And Voltron charged..
Veru would have quite agreed with Red Lion's pilot. Again he issued commands into the headset and then said to the helmsman, "Mark these coordinates and stand ready on my mark!"
Suddenly Voltron was jerked forward and again they were stuck to the robeast, this time the force holding them was stronger than before. The robeast accelerated his speed very quickly and to Keith's horror, they were streaking towards the planet.
"Everyone! Reverse polarity - all power to your engines!" Keith yelled.
"Keith! We got bigger problems!" Pidge cried.
"Oh shit!" Lance exclaimed. "Missiles!"
"Not just any missiles, Voltron Force!" An unfamilar voice came over their coms. "Planet Killers! Rest in pieces, fools!"
The transmission ended abruptly when the world seemed to explode around all of them.
