Blind Faith:Fifteen
Mind Games
She gasped in realization. "No.." she choked back a sob.
"What is it, princess?" A voice came from in back of her. She jumped.
"He's - he's dead..David.." she bit her lip and then she looked at Zarkon
suspiciously.
"That can't be, my dear. I saw you treat him last night. From what I could see, he was stable."
"You killed him!" She accused.
"I?" Zarkon looked at her shocked."I was nowhere near the doctor, my dear. YOU were the last one who treated him, I believe."
Allura was distraught. She had been the one who had quickly aided him. Ha
she done something wrong? No. Zarkon surely had something to do with this.
Zarkon bent and picked up something. It was a wrapper that patches came in.
"Hmm, what's this? Ah, you must have dropped this yesterday." he handed her the wrapper. Allura's eyes widened.
"No, I couldn't have. I know I had the right one." she whispered.
Zarkon looked concerned as she paled. "Princess, are you all right?"
"I had the right one, I just know it." Allura trembled and Zarkon took the wrapper from her.
"Terus'caalan.." Zarkon read. "That's a painkiller for Drules..you must have accidently used it on the doctor." his eyes widened in mock surprise.
"Oh, David.." a tear went down her cheek. "I'm - I'm sorry.." She put a hand over her face, willing herself not to cry.
Zarkon took the opportunity to put his hands on her shoulders. "There,
there, my dear. It was an accident. *I* know you did not mean to kill the doctor."
She gasped at his words and started to shake. David had been Lotor's only hope. He said his treatment would last several more months - could she monitor him and make sure all went well? And oh god, she killed him! She bit her lips to keep from screaming. She only wanted Zarkon to get his hands off her.
"Get away from me, Zarkon." she said lowly.
"Nonsense. You obviously need my assistance in this matter. I will help you."
She realized she needed to bury David or perhaps store his body - something.
She just didn't want Zarkon helping her.
"I - I have to do this myself." Her hands shook as she turned off David's monitors.
"I am here, my dear. Let me help you. I have much to atone for."
Oh yes you do... she thought resentfully, hiding her fear of him. Even after all this time, his very closeness repelled her.
Allura was able to find where David had had storage tubes for the storing of the dead. These tubes were sealed so that nothing could get in or out. Bodies did not decay in the tube due to the sealed enviroment. Once the body was in the tube, they went along a tunnel until they reached their resting place in a large cavern below ground where nothing could get to them. Zarkon
helped her place David's body in a shroud and place him in a tube. There was only the two of them to see him off and as she released the tube, she closed
her eyes and said a brief prayer, asking him to forgive her.
Zarkon looked at her striken face with satisfaction. The poor dear believed that she killed the doctor. Poor little princess! He wanted to laugh at her sorrow.
They went back into the hospital part of the caverns where Allura went to check on Lotor's status. According to what David had told her, when Lotor would reach a conscious state, his reading levels would go up to a point and then fluids would be given to him in order for him to sleep. At some point,Lotor would reach conscious level and stay there. The machine would
compensate and would release Lotor from it's coccoon, ready for unassisted healing to begin.
Allura noted his levels were high today. She could have sworn she saw his eyes try to open. She ignored Zarkon, who was practically staring a hole in her back.
"How is he today?" he asked.
"He is well." Allura said curtly.
"Ah.." Zarkon smiled. "Well, that is good. We wouldn't want any more mistakes to happen now, would we?"
He was gratified to see her wince. He walked to where she was and said, "My dear, you must sit down a bit. I know you've had a very trying time. Why don't we eat something, hm? I am sure you are hungry."
~Not enough to eat with you..~ Allura thought as she glared at him.
"No thank you."
"Suit yourself my dear, but you wouldn't want to let yourself waste away - not a pretty thing like you."
He headed for the refrigerator unit that was in a sort of living area of the cavern. The living area consisted of a couch, some chairs and a refrigerator/wave oven. David had explained that his hospital staff had had quarters beyond the caverns, but once they were gone, he slept in the hospital.
Zarkon rumaged about in the refrigerator humming the latest popular tune and for Allura this seemed like a very unreal dream. Her father's murderer - the one who had walked into their castle and insulted her family, the one who nearly destroyed her planet simply because it reisisted his rule.
Now he was rooting about in the small kitchen area making a sandwich!
Allura turned away in disgust. Now what was she to do? He couldn't stay here forever but she had to stay with Lotor - despite the fact htat she had accidently -
No, she wouldn't think of that now. She knew she had had the IV right. She knew it. Doubt still plagued her mind and she was deep in thought as Zarkon finished his sandwich and came over to where she was with Lotor.
"Well, my dear. I should be getting back. So many things to do for Amalgamus. He relies on me quite a bit."
~Thank God!~ Allura thought. ~Be gone already!~
"I'm sure you do, Zarkon."
"I must take Lotor back with me, of course.." he smiled slightly.
"No, you can't!" Allura cried.
Zarkon raised a brow. "I - can't? My dear princess, as I said earlier, we've
been patient with your efforts to heal my son, but he must be brought to justice. I don't wish to see you prosecuted for doing such a good deed. I'll simply take him back and no one will be the wiser. It will be our - little secret."
She did not like the way he said that - "our little secret" - as if they were hiding something.
"He's not ready yet! He still needs to heal within the machine. You know my word is good and that I will take him back to face trial. As for a little secret, I'm sure Amalgamus knows - I'm sure you make it a point for him to."
Zarkon loomed over her, frowning. "There are some things Amagamus is too busy to attend to - that's where I come in, princess. Now I am taking my son and you are going back to Arus and attend to your business.as you should do."
Allura drew herself to her full height, which was not a match for Zarkon's taller frame.
"I do not take kindly to be ordered, Zarkon. As I recall, your side lost the war. This is my business when our own want to butcher someone who is helpless to prevent it. I would do that for anyone - including your son. So don't tell me what my business should be! You are no longer king of Doom and even then
you had no hold on me nor Arus."
How dare she? How DARE she fling his defeat in his face! He wanted to hit her for her insult. His eyes narrowed with anger and he leaned forward, pressing her against the rough wall of the cavern. Allura's eyes suddenly held fear in them and she realized that she had pushed Zarkon too far.
His face was murderous - just like it had been the day he killed her parents..
